Business in Washington DC

The perception of Washington as only a governmental city couldn't be more wrong and outdated. The entrepreneur spirit is flourishing in the greater Washington region driven by the growth of technology industries. In fact the number of people employed by the federal government has decreased from 23% of the total workforce to only 13% in the last twenty years.

Greater Washington has a diverse private-sector economy, with strong technology, international business and tourism sectors. The region is also an association capital. It is by several measures the largest high-tech market in the country; and also considered an ideal location for firms looking to gain global exposure and access to federal policy makers. Among the highest educated workforce in the country, nearly 40% of the region's population has a college degree. The region also has one of the highest average income levels of any U.S. metro region.

The region thrives on easy access. Three modern airports provide the region access to markets across the nation and around the world. A world-class metro system helps connect the suburbs to the capital city.

Bio-informatics in the Greater
Washington DC region
The United States is generally regarded to be leading in the field of bio-informatics, typically represented by a handful of major regional science clusters. One of these clusters can be found in the Greater Washington DC Region, encompassing the District of Columbia, The State of Virginia, and the State of Maryland. This strong cluster reflects perfectly the rapid growth of emerging enablers such as bio-informatics. So too the regional bio-informatics development reflects the opportunities and challenges this field represents. The Greater Washington DC region alone is home to one of the largest biotech clusters
in the US with almost 400 biotech companies (almost 300 in Maryland alone). This cluster benefits from its proximity to the National Institutes of Health, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of Standards and Technology and many other federally funded laboratories and agencies.
IT & Telecom and Fairfax County
Fairfax County is estimated to be one of the five leading high technology centers in the country and the home to the largest concentration of high-tech service firms in the US. Although, Internet related industry has grown exceptionally all over the world, Fairfax County maintains its dominance in the field today. According to a recent Washington Technology article, 10 percent of the approximately 250 national Internet access providers are located in Fairfax County and three of the nine U.S. full-access Internet services providers were founded here.
